English translation

(Kangar, 16th JUNE) - Three pupils from SJKC Khay Beng, Seberang Ramai, Kuala Perlis who presented their vivid dan lively short video at the Putra Palace Hotel won third place in the Perlis Multimedia FOSSCamp 2014. The camp was organized by UniMAP, SK Sena and JPN Perlis. The main purpose of the camp and the short competition is to encourage young students to use Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). At the same time, this kind of learning will build their senses of creativity and cooperation among different races.

Woi Zhe Li, Jacky Ko and Yap Hui Min are quite talented and interested in the performing arts. Under their teacher's encouragement and guidance, they had started their docu-drama at Putra Palace. Besides acting, they also learned how to edit videos using FOSS with their teammate. The pupils' efforts were recognized by the judges and they managed to win third place out of eleven groups.

The teacher expresses her gratitude to the Headmaster, teachers, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and parents who trusted her with guiding their children. For her, winning or losing doesn't matter. The most vital part is that the pupils were able to acquire new skills and discover their strong points.

Currently, SJKC Khay Beng is participating in ICOM. They will upload another short video before July 31st on YouTube. According to relevant sources, ICOM will be judged by Malaysian education and multimedia experts. The winners will receive prizes and certificates, and their videos will be shown on the Open Source Initiative (OSI) website - original translation by Ms. Marion Koh, SJKC Khay Beng

A Word From The Creator Of Our Favorite Computer Operating System

Q: So, how do you feel about potentially billions of dollars of wealth being created from your creation that you're not necessarily directly cashing out?

A: So? If I hadn't made Linux available, I mean, I wouldn't have gotten a name, (or) money that way either. So I mean, it's a win-win situation. Just the fact that there are a lot of commercial companies, means that there are a lot of Linux people who used to work on Linux (kind of) along the side, and now they get paid for doing what they wanted to do. That helps me in the sense that I wanted them to work on Linux anyway.
